background images

I am very impressed from the gallery photos. I want to ask a question, very important to us. We make architectural renderings, mostly exterior scenes. Is it possible to use photos for background? Sometimes it is very difficult to re-model what is all around the building.
Also, how can someone make clouds?
Is it something to wait for when official release comes out?
Also, camera matching is something we would like to use, so photos are important.
We are thinking of buing Maxwell so we would appreciate any help.

Although you can't load background images into Maxwell, it does export an alpha channel so you can composite in Photoshop, or whatever afterwards.
As for clouds I'd do the same although there is talk of clouds within Maxwell in the future...

You can texture map your b.g. photo onto a plane (placed in your scene's background), which is a more manual method than what other 3D apps accomplish, but this software is still just in beta, as you surely know. I haven't attempted this myself yet, but hopefully someone who has will chime in soon for you, give an idea as to specifics.

Thanks, I didn't think it is possible, but I had to ask. I guess we should ask the Maxwell team for this.

We make architectural renderings
Could you name the specific program that you use? Maybe someone here also uses the same program and could then give you some specifics of what you could do as an alternative in the current version of M~R.

The only way I know to place a photo in the background is to place an emitter plane with the photo as texture. For a composite work we would need a frontal projection (NDC in renderman), but I never heard that it is implemented now or (not in Rhino)?

I use Max. All I want is to be able to have some general background for my renderings... Even a picture of a sky with clouds would be ok. Depending on the camera angle and the height of the building I would like to be able to move the picture up or down to fit best. You know, U and V position from the material editor.
