Strange artifact in Maxwell.... Voxel tiles?

In a 2K render I though I saw vertical and horizontal structures, resizing and level adjustment in Photoshop revealed this structure:
Some level adjustment revealed this - see bottom left of the pict:
The orientation of these "tiles" is in camera space... ware we seeing voxels here? Current sampling level is 6.5
Anyone else who came across such artifacts?
