the mxi generated from either a ldr or a hdr image and the mxi created when using the -mxi:w option are two different kind of files. you can't just open a continuable (?) mxi with the viewer as if it was an emitting (?) mxi.
anyway, have those mxis been created with an older version?

they are all created with the latest versionof plugins/maxwell and are created using -mxi:w
