Hi all,
a wip about old Renault car Le mans.
(model by Angelo Becattini from a tutorial that we
will published on 3D Professional 12 magazine for lw)

LightWave 3D connection
1 hour of rendering on PC PIV 3.4.
Texturing in progress but MR has some problem about this!
No materials for now, all diffuse as default.

If i add a dielectric on a part of object (glass for example)
MR render it but lost all the bitmap textures!

3D model in low polys from NURBS structure (MR crash on NURBS subdivide by 1 o 2!) last beta 1.2.2 and lw plug-in...

yes, I can confirm this happens also in Cinema 4d! when a scene is complete with all its diffuse materials and you add a dielectric the rendering is completely white or however texture-less... :?

Very strange behaviour...

If i cut the plexigass surfaces to make another and separate 3D model, MR lost the bitmap image (.TGA) from rendering...
i have not assigned yet any new material to them,
i have only cut a part of model and MR lost the bitmaps!
Is it a BUG?!? :?

Are you sure the dielectric material is not present in your main object? LW usually keep materials when you delete parts with them, you have to save/reopen your file to get rid of it.

Strange...

HDSBOIS: yeah i'm sure
no dielectric material in the main body and it rendering...
if i make some surface changes (cut or add dielectric surface) it lost
bitmap textures...

Another problem is that it crash if i make a subdivision on NURBS better then 1, ad example 2 for some parts of the model to smooth them... the geometriy grow from 80.000 polygon to 120.000...
and this with 1,5 GB of ram...
any1 has tested HD rendering?
Which is the command line to make a test and rendeing it on HD?
Thank you.

A GOOD THING!

OK i answer to me!
With -hd in command line it works
now MR is rendering a more smooth 3d model...
it's a bit slow but works!
I will update soon...

Now i discover a good thing.
You can start to render with -hd option with more complex models/high resolution...
Then the program creates the .mxs file and save it on
next limit/maxwell/output directory.
Close maxwell.
Close Lightwave or Cinema 4D or Maya or 3DS max or any 3d software that has generatex the scene and you have a much more memory!
Click on .mxs file and it will start render without -hd option now then it's much more fast!
The preview window works now and not with -hd command line...

I'm pretty sure your scene scale's off.

scale off?

Hi Mike,
Scale off in lw?

Layout grid is in meter and the car is in meter and cm in 1:1 scale...

There is no scale to fix in LW, just so you know Mverta... hummm

Strange I am able to set subdiv asmuch as I want... and I was one of the first to do a hd- test in LW...

Update

OK,
now i have subdivided some part of the NURBS model in a better way,
All is polygonal (triangles) for 150.000 polygons.

Rendered it in -hd mode to start mxs file and then i close LW and rendered without it
as you can read above in this thread and in the FAQ posted yesterday by Victor in this section...

No materials for now only diffuse as default and phisical sky...,

Hervè: render subpatch level don't works with maxwell, only display level subpatch as it's write in lw doc.

I'm traing with level 1 and 2 now on this NURBS model and level 1 works fine with -hd mode (80.000 polygons) but level 2 (320.000 polygon) crash MR and Lw in the first phase (this PC has 1,5 GByte RAM and 25 GB free on partition C where MR is installed), without open the MR GUI... anyone of nextlimit programmers want this scene to test it? :?

Car Paint material...

Hi Harvè,
do you have (or any other user) good and fast settings for car paint material
in lw?
Thanks a lot

ADL, I know only dispaly subpatch work and it replace render subpatch for Maxwell...

Plastic maybe with a 78 % map for spec.... not grey...
Take you car color, turn it into a small map, and lower brightness until 78% greyscale (in photoshop go info, palette option... show greyscale.. and so lower your map brightness until it says 78%)

then go to Saturation, lower 10%....about.... and put the result in Spec channel... UV roughness set to 0,012 both...

this is how I would do... he he in LW that is...

Iker and Hervè: Thank you for the suggests...

Hervè: this is a fast test with your method (color map on specular channel).
In the first image only diffuse material for default and in the second with Hervè method (plastic) ... :)

The black color of bitmap texture is washed out...
uhm we need some fine adjustaments...
but we know that the metal look depends on surrounding environment,
then i will going to make a lot of tests...

You see, this is a major problem with the LW plugin ( Victor said it could also be Maxwell) , I mean the specularity and reflection channel are sort of mixed up... so one goes with the other... you could try making a different surface for the letters...
