Maxwell memory vs cpu

I'm rendering a scene atm,
- res 1200x900
- Geometry:
Num Meshes: 337
Num Triangles: 4950580
Num Vertexes: 2488263
Num Normals: 2494757
- lots of light emitters through sss materials
Voxelization took ages and it's now rednering and has been for 2hrs.
It's still on sampling lvl 0 and my pc is using 1gig physical and 1.28gig swap ram.
When calculating sampling the ram is ~ 1gig physical + 1.28gig swap and cpu fluctuates from ~4% to ~10%.
When updating the scene to the next sub lvl ( which is currently in increments of 0.000000...) of sampling the memory goes upto 1.32 gig swap and ~25% cpu.
- My question is why doesn't maxwell use more cpu when calculating the sampling ?
It seems to me it's not using my system as efficiently as it could or should.
System
2 x xeon 2gig
1gig rd ram
3gig paging set
please help.

Hello Phillip,
how many threads have you set in the render parameters? Put 16 or more threads to make sure that Maxwell gets all the power of your system.

I have ht set on my pc, 2 dual xeon's, and maxwell only allows me to set 8 threads.
I currently have 4 threads set as i heard before that setting lots of threads can slow the render instead of speeding it up as it should do

ok that makes sence. Then i need more ram, anyone know a good place to buy rambus ( pc800 ecc rd ram ) from ? cheap !!
Oh and expanders slots, they stopped producing them for rambus and i could really use one to increase the amount of ram as i only have 2 dimms free and rambus can only be purchased in 512's max

think that to increase ram i should change my 1gb on two slot and replace them with 2 gb on two slot ..throwing my old ram off the windows
i can assure u philipbruton that using hd option pls th: 16 option helped me a lot

yes but did your scene have nearly 5millions faces ?

Num Meshes: 745
Num Triangles: 3028235
Num Vertexes: 5578097
Num Normals: 5570255
those are my numbers.. less triangles but more vertex and normal
and ... i was forgetting... res 1200 x 2500 ( almost double than yours)

ok that's interesting, mines now @ 3hrs 24 mins and it's hit lvl 1 just,
what's the stats on your render progress in comparison ?
Edit: i would also ask what system you are using ?

i have a pentium 4 3gh ht 1gb ram ...

Here's where my scene has got to,
stats:
## Scene Information ##
337 meshes ( 4158897 triangles )
## Render Information ##
*settings:
resolution: 640 x 480
renders for 20 mins hits lvl 4
command line is " -d -hd -mxi:w "
when it gets to the 1st update mxcl crashes every time.
I've defragemented my drive, reduced the scene poly count, reduced the resolution and it just keeps crashing after the 1st update.
does anyone have any ideas to improve this
the scene has over 4 million faces emitting light through 25 sss bulbs, but to be honest i don't think that is the problem.
My machine, after defragementing is using 100% cpu instead of next to nothing and the paging is only 1.28gig / 3 gig so it's not running out of memory, it just crashes !
