G'day!

I did this test last night and it finished rendering afternoon now today. Nothing really special to say about it, just a test with some simple models i downloaded from http://www.3dlapidary.com/Home.htm
It took 15 hours to render and it reached sampling level 16, but not really anything changed in the last 9 hours of rendering :( which wasn't much fun, o well.. here it is anyways.

"infinite amount of patience..." But the scene looks awesome!

(And I was just about to ask, how can one model such complex gemstones...)

Hey all :) and thanx for your nice comments even tho it's just a noisy testrendering.

DIA: Thanx man :)

Hervé: Yea you're right, 3d printing would kick ass with gems like this, i'd be a rich man *sigh*

def4d: I agree with u on those white facets, they looked normal and good like 2-3 hours in the rendering, then they turned to white like this and it looked wrong. I'll fix it next time sometimes.. :)

Aldaryn: Thanks! :) i appreciate it, and yep the gemstones are free on that website link i included. Try them out, they're great for tests like this.

Actually you're right about that tonfarben, i noticed the lack of caustics and dispersion patterns in the rendering but i somehow forgot about that. Not sure why it's missing in action, maybe my materials or setup is wrong somehow. But i have one large big strong emitting lightplane above the gems at 7500W cool white. I thought that'd be enough to lit it properly to generate caustics that would cover the entire scene but there's hardly anything visible at all :(

Thanks tho, i'm happy to see you also liked it even tho it has a number of faults in it :)

yu're right ! in reality, big emitters would give some totally white facets... 5 or 6 tiny ones might be the answer....

Oh, and dont forget to place some small emitters at very sharp angles, so you'll get nice reflected caustics also! :)

White sides are caused by this too big emitter i think, same for the low caustics.

Thanx for the tips guys, i tossed out the bigass emitter i had and threw in 8 tiny emitters placed around the scene in various places mostly randomly hehe and with alot less power to each one so it won't get so overexposed. I'll let this gems cook during the night and tomorrow morning i should have something new to post again :)

I appreciate the tips and suggestions from u all :D
