Black dots - effect of single precision?

As most here will know already, there is a connection between the infamous black dots and collapsed or overlapping faces. Hypernurbs also seem to trigger that effect.

Some teste here show that exspecially increasing the hypernurbs division increases the number of black dots/patches. Higher divisions mean smaller polygones. I'm wondering if the single precision that Maxwell uses internally to render is not exact enough - so that in the case that you have very small polygons they are collapsing.

However, I'm wondering why this wasn't a problem with the alpha.

Any comments or further insight?

Ive made rendeings of simple boxes without black dots. And just by simply increasing the UV roughness value to 1.0 using metal material, the dots came up.

Im not positive about black dots as a consecuence of bad geometry.

How do you know it uses single precision? Also I doubt the core between alpha and beta changed that much....actually I think it has more to do with the new mxi capabilities....

Very interesting.
I suppose double precision would include a speed tax.

there might be a connection though. i've noticed that the number of dots increases with complex or heavily smoothed geometries.

i got dots even with perfectly slick surfaces (uv roughness 0,0), anyway they were less in number compared to the same scene with rough materials.

You know, maybe it's time we just accept that we don't know what's causing the dots and that NL does know :) Lets just wait for the patch because it seems writing another 20 posts about won't get us any further.

Almost every situation produces dots, sss, no sss, metal, no metal, complex/simple geometry...so lets just let it go for now :)

How am I supposed to let days go by, waiting for the next patch, if I am not alowed to post insane dot consipracy theorys

Those dots are product of a very intricate virus designed by the creators of Vray and FinalRender. Who have united to bring maxwell down muahahaha

Now seiously... Those Dots are getting the best of me.

and dots of all kinds, not only black: yellow dots, white dots, purple dots, big dots, small dots. guess you're right mihai, let's the dots alone, they are smarter than us.

I don't know about Pentiums, but PPCs usually are faster calculating doubles than singles. It takes more memory to save double though.

However, I have no indication that the alpha used doubles, so I would guess that this hasn't changed between alpha & beta.

You bastards!! You let us squable for days, and then say something like that

Ahhh...

Frustration a part, Im as happy as a toad in a pond to hear that!! Keep up the good work
