Before starting to render you also need to check:
In the "About" dialog are both engine and plugin versions showing 1.2 beta?
You MUST reapply all materials in the scene. By this I mean you must first make a new Maxwell material, and reapply it to the object. It's not enough simply to assign another material then reassign the old Maxwell material.
If you are using sss with the lamp materials, there are certain settings that make a lot of noise, not sure which ones, but I'm beginning to think it tends to be when there is great difference between the abs and scattering settings, so try and keep them fairly close. Just an assumption though....

i too have just stopped a matadorlight (latest version) render as it reached sample 10 and was nearly all black sploges. The previous version of the same scene worked fine.
do materials have to be reapplied even in matador or this an other issue

Yes, sometimes i'm to obtained this kind of results with old scenes. But i'm not undestand wat in the material descriprion is wrong.
Since other users with Max plug-in obtaind same results i was thinking it's not a matadorlight problem. But today we take a look to undestand wat is wrong.
Sorry.

If you follow the instructions you scene will render correctly.

what you can do is get your scene into a huge sphere and map this sphere with a mxi. don't know how it would work, never tried myself, but i think i remember someone doing something similar. can't find the thread at the moment.
edit:
found it:

Hi buffos,
simply convert a bitmap of a star-sky to mxi ...
place a sphere around your scene with a custom light shader
a attach the mxi-file...
