I'm trying to create a slate floor material with relatively deep grout lines, yet a light bump for the stone panels. I can achieve this with pretty good results using displacement,


but I thought I could significantly reduce render time by doing the same thing with bumps. My main question is this: can I have one bump for the grout lines, and set that pretty high, and have a separate bump for the stone texture at a much lower setting?

Here's an attempt at the bump version:


It's too smooth, and I also lowered the roughness too much. It's also having a weird problem in the grout joint:
