Hiding geometry from IES lighting

This is probably just my pure ignorance, but for the ies lighting feature that's coming in version 2:

1) how will the actual geometry of a light fixture affect the light coming from the ies data? Can the geometry be hidden from it?

2) if question #1 is yes, can the fixture still receive shadows/reflections to make it look realistic?

Just curious ...
