In Windows Explorer:
- find an .MXM file
- right click on it, choose 'Open with...'; you're now offered to choose a program - go to your Maxwell Directory, and chose MXED.exe - that's MXM Editor
-You should now be able to see the material preview

You can try this:

- open a command prompt (run as administrator)
- navigate to the Maxwell directory
- type regsvr32 thumbplug_mxm.dll
- hit enter
- you should get a dialog indicating that the DLL was registered successfully

Let me know if that takes care of it...
