MXS file does not exist

this is a sequel to my previous question on how to use batch rendering.
I try to add jobs to the queue, but get following message for EVERY file I select, even a simple one with just a cube and a lightsource:

MXS file does not exist or it is invalid or Obsolete. Please choose a valid MXS.

While searching this forum, I found several posts with this error message, but the last one dated 2007, and there the answer was to install the latest patch. I am running the most recent (1.7.1) version, so this can't be the problem. the platform is MacOs 10.5.6. on an intel 8core
I tried it on another Mac (intel macbook pro) with same result.

any ideas?
tnx
wim
