I'm making this thread to brainstorm about "creating grass in Maxwell"

I'll be posting soon, a few examples of what I have done (which falls short of what I would like to have)

If anyone can contribute in any way.. please do so. :D

Here you can find some free grass textures

(thanks Max... for the good find)

here you can find some maxwell grass textures from the mxmgallery

OK, nothing special; just for the warm up:
Both images where rendered over 2 years ago, so...
But it's grass, for sure

#1:Tree & grass
Notice: Because of it's ugliness the 3D tree in the middle was originally rated R, so it had to be censored to get a PG13.

#2: A weird-looking hill covered with grass

PS: I'm first!!!

Ok, but it doesn't really help unless you tell how you did it.

That's a nice grass indeed and the composition with the tree looks artistic anyway :D

tom, I have a question for you...

when working with sss, you need to have closed objects (instead of planes) correct?
Then, what happens when those objects have clip maps? would still work?

====

here is one of my images using single planes instances... because of the instance intersecting other instances and objects my Benchmark was 3.02

What was your benchmark?

BTW.. the tree probably is ultra cool, but top secret... that is why it is censored

I have used clip mapped leaves with thickness and SSS.

well, the thickness sure does make a difference! :D

Definitely. Adding SSS to single planes can have strange results.

Yes, they must be watertight volumes.

They will fail.

Yes, this is a current issue with intersecting instances, nothing about your SSS settings or objects.

Clipped leaves, 1/128" thickness and weight mapped SSS:

Brian, Leonardo didn't particularly ask the question for the thin leaves :) So I have to answer in general. If I've said "they work", you could post a failing cube with clipmaps. So what? :)
Btw, nice leaves!

Ok, so the answer is yes and no.

BTW, thanks!

So, from this... should I assume that: "as long as the thickness is small enough.. then it will work?"

Tom, is it safe to assume that this current issue, will not longer be an issue in Maxwell 2.0? ( a " " will be a good enough answer)

I'd love this wink too! I'm just working on developing a host a good low poly trees (given what is out there is not so good) and wondering whether to allow for thickness to the leaf components.

BTW Leonardo - stunning work on that posted render mate!
