How do i start using SSS?

Do i just create a layer and adjust the parameters? I reckon they are..universal?

also any links to tutorials u guys recommend?

Just make a layer SSS instead BSDF and use one of the presets.
In MXED it is obvious, you right-click and you see it... and the presets are pre-loaded in a dropdown menu.

Yeah, that's the best way to start, by using presets. Then get crazy with the settings! Make sure your mesh is a closed solid.

Actually it is usually added to it... I think the best way is to go to MXM gallery, find sss mats made by others and test them... There are some great mats there using SSS

You can mix SSS with BSDF, or mix several SSS together etc. But the material properties of a BSDF are replaced with SSS, although the surface properties remain the same between the two. Please check the manual also.
