For me, if it's a not a multiview series of shots, well even then it can be worked out, I prefer image planes with clip maps. If you absolutely have to have 3D models then I suggest XFrog, Speed Tree, or Onyx Trees.

My opinion:
Using clipped trees with a render engine like Maxwell's is like driving a Ferrarri under 20 mph... That's not what it was made for. Clipped trees are for unbiased renderers where you don't care how realistic the lighting/shadows are.

I use Onyx Trees. They look very realistic and have many parameters to make them exactly how you want.

i wouldn´t say that - have you had a look at these greens? all clip mapped, i think. so as normal it is allways a matter of how things are done.

Yes, I've seen those renders. No offense to daros great work, but they are still recognizable as clip mapped vegetation. A well modeled and textured 3d tree will always look better than a flat plane image in a renderer like Maxwell because of the accuracy of the lighting. Pictures of trees already are lit in the photos...

The key you will find is finding clip mapped tress and plants that were photographed on overcast day's. Most of the ones i see are photographed at 1:00 on a summers day. And look fake in any rendering. If you find any good ones i would love to know myself.
