Just wondering if anyone had some insight as to why my material ID ends up kinda noisy and and not solid colors for wasy editing in Photoshop. Is the quality of the Material ID proportional to the Sample level setting or am i just doing something wrong. Thanks.

Maybe is a reflective or transparent material? If so, try to output the Mat-ID channel from a provvisional scene where the material that gives you problems is solid :)

the usual problem I have with mat-id is that all colors are very similar (eg. all in light blue tones)
when i try to select some with the magic wands, a lot of other areas in the image are selected. that's very annoying... i did not find a better solution for it :(

It helps if you check Contiguous in the magic wand options.

In Gimp, but I think also in Photoshop too, you can use the magic wand in different ways:
Composite, Red, Green, Blu.Tonality, Saturation, Value.

For me it works better with the appropriate one. Hope it help.

Ricky.

not the best solution if you got a lot of small separate objects with the same material
