tips to reduce noise w/ SSS material?

Hello:

I have an interior scene with a number of large (4' x 8') translucent panels designated w/ a preset SSS MXM. all the panel have tube lights behind and are generating a lot of noise in the scene.

Are there any ways to minimize the noise? If I reduce the SSS material thickness (currently 1/4") will this make a difference? Are some SSS settings more noise producing than others?

Thanks in advance for any help.

If you can get a similar effect with translucency and roughness instead of SSS, I say go for it. SSS is very noisy and requires HIGH s.l. to clear. It will be even worse with emitters behind it.
