material id

Do you guys use this channel a lot and find it useful?
I'm used to the alpha channels generated by cinema 4d in my old days for selecting different materials and must say, they worked much better.
the material id channel (or object id as well) are generated before the rendering, so they do not improve with high SL. But I think they aren't clean enough, or am I doing something wrong? Objects behind a glass are even much more noisy.
I usually select the material I want to edit, by using the "Select -> Color Range" in Photoshop or sometimes just the Magic Wand. But either way, I'm not getting a proper selection of the material.
The alpha channel combined with "remove black matte" works much better!
