Exporting OBJ files from Studio worked fine before, but now it says 'Error, the current geometry is protected and cannot be exported'.
Anyone know why this happens?
Is it because of new Studio version?

When exporting to MXS from your 3d-host application there is a protect tag in the maxwell controls. I cant speak for all packages but C4D definitely has it. Uncheck that before exporting to studio and you will be able to go back again.

I tried to reexport the geometry of the light fixtures that are on the studio libraries, so I could use them in 3D max, but I got the "protected" error. That means that studio absolutely won´t let me export them?

That means you need to find the "protect" button in Studio to uncheck before exporting!

(If you imported something protected and want to export it - that can be prevented...)

Interestingly, once an mxs created on my PC is opened in Studio on my mac-pro it won't allow export of OBJ's, even if I transfer it back to the PC.
Mxs files created on the PC continue to allow OBJ export as long as it is not opened on the mac.

No sign of a 'protect' button in either studio or SW plug-in!

All Studio settings are the same on both machines, so it looks like a Mac bug!??..............NL?

"geometry protection" is IMHO the single most annoying and useless Maxwell Render idea ever (maybe the only really bad idea from Next Limit?). I hope someone at Next Limit realizes this one day soon...

Unfortunatly I agree. Really never had to share "protected" files.

@adman: in the SW plugin, see Scene Manager > Output Settings > Enable MXS Protection.

@ KurtS: afaik, this was a user-requested feature intended to serve at least a couple of different purposes: (a) to allow for third parties creating 'locked' library scenes which could then be offered for sale, and (b) to allow sharing files with clients for review while still preventing them from stealing work-in-progress IP. I am not commenting here on the value that may or may not have been realized, but for what it's worth, those were some of the reasons.

Thanks JD
I think the facility to protect files (just as I can with e-drawings etc) is a very useful feature.
Trouble is, the default setting (correctly) is 'off' and I have to date not even noticed the feature, certainly not changed it!

Is there a reason that studio on the Mac seems, by default, to protect files from OBJ export and somehow tag the file so that it can no longer export even when returned to the PC?

@JDHill
I agree and I understand.
What I miss is the way this has been done. I'm totally out from exporting because I only import obj. I would prefer a password.

Ricky.

You mean file protection in general, or are you the first ever I 've heard of that really uses this feature with Maxwell?

Oh... you mean you do not use it, ... "theoretically" it is a very useful feature?

OBJ export is useful to me!
Are you able to answer the question Kurt?

Hi again adman, sorry that I missed your earlier reply. I can't reproduce the issue here; I can save an mxs on osx, then open and export .obj from it on pc, or vice versa. I'm using Studio 1.7.1.

Try this:

1) open Studio 1.7.1 without loading any scene. Then try File>Library>objects>primitives> and pick an object, like a cylinder or sphere or any other object from the list. Now you have a scene with only one primitive object, and everything is created in Studio.

2) select the object and export it to OBJ

this is the result i get: "the current geometry is protected and cannot be exported."

why would Next Limit protect something that anyone can create in seconds using any avaiable 3d app since 1985? Is there really a market for selling balls and cylinders?
