Hi again. I want to ask other arch. viz pros, what is their favorite way of lighting interior scenes (apartments etc.). I usually use physical sun and emitters pointing inside of a metal cone. what are you using? what renders fastest? any tip and opinion counts for me in the never-ending quest for faster-less noisier render. thanx !

I don't do interior scenes that often, but I think I heard before that using the sun will increase dramatically the time to reduce noise.
I don't know if that is still the case
good luck

Emitters pointing into metal (shiny?) cones? That lights your entire scene with caustics; I'd be surprised if that ever cleared up!

I recommend setting up an emitter outside of the scene instead of trying to use the sun system. Try this:
Create a box, cut out a small hole in the box, turn on sunlight, put a camera inside the box and render. Very noisy for a very long time. In interior renderings, fill lights are your friend. The more light you can get into the scene, the faster it will clear.
Also for interior scenes, like mverta said, don't point your emitter up into the reflecting cone. Point it out. But you can slide it back into the cone a bit to get nice light patterns on adjacent surfaces, but remember the more times that light has to bounce around inside the cone before it escapes and reaches the camera, the longer it will take to render.

thanx for all comments. I point the lights inside the cone so it will create nice "vray ies" patterns on the walls...the scenes clear only at SL 20-21 and image de-noiser....

Are you using 0 roughness for the cones material? You could try increasing the roughness a bit so you still get the light patterns but it might help clear the noise faster with a bit of roughness in the reflective material.

I'm using metals that have 1,2 etc. roughness values, I'll try other, thanx !
p.s. - I did render scenes with emitters pointing outside the lamps but it's less impressive ...
