So does this only render at the screen resolution not the resolution of the camera? Can I not change/increase the resolution?
If not, thats a pointless feature.

just stop the rendering , resize resolution and restart MXCL

Good plan, thanks - i've done this, however the render had finished already. I couldn't do it that way using resume render. The render kept failing so I've had to re-render.

The method is OK if you do it in the beginning of the rendering process. But I agree that this should not really be neccesary. NL should fix this BUG at once.
