render region won't launch mxcl (mac)

since some time, hitting render region in studio and defining an area generates a file_blowup_tmp.mxs, but does not launch mxcl anymore. is there a way to bring it back, this nice feature?

mw 171 on macos 10.5.5 intel 8core
