Hi,
I have finally finished my first Maxwell Project. It was quite stressing at the end, because I couldn't render bigger than 1600*x. That ws the point where I would have wished to have stayed with xsi
I have a pc with xppro 32bit and 4Gig Ram, and I was wondering what would be better, Linux 64 (what Linux? Debian or Ubuntu?) or better switch to xpro 64? or Vista64? What is the most stable OS for Maxwell and what cold have handled a bigger res with 4Gig Ram?
Thanks

Do you have a 32bit processor? You can install 64bit OS on a 32bit machine, anything 64bit will remove the 2Gb memory ceiling that windows has, I have to go with Linux 64 (Ubuntu is debian based) it is easy to use and probably the least hair pulling i have had to do with any linux OS I have tried, maybe fedora would be an option too, I have installed maxwell once once with partial success, some more detailed instructions would be great, dont seem to be many visitors on the linux part of the forum (still waiting for help) but i have to rebuild my machine so i will tackle the install some time soon.
I have Vista 64 ultimate, imho it is the usual microsoft bells and whistles shit, XP 64 i would go with that one, wish i had.
Cheers
Brett

Really? XP64bit can be installed on a 32bit machine, and that will give u the possibility of using any amount of RAM? I didnt know about this...I thought processors and/or mainboards had to be prepared for 64bit OSes (forgive my ignorance here). I understand that using 64bit software is mandatory for maximum RAM usage....
thanx for confirmation

I like Vista 64bit Business. The Business Edition comes with all (most) the bells and whistles disabled. It has never locked up or crashed in almost a year.

I have Vista Buisiness installed on my first notebook partition, terrible! Ok, it's only 32bit but it was so much quicker and with less hassle to be able to work under xp again. Hmmm, I heard that more than 4GB doesn't really help, as it is not really adressing more than 4GB?

In my experience, Gentoo Linux is best, but Studio does not work. Only rendering is possible.
If you don't like Linux, Windows 2003 Server 64 bit will be great.
I tried 2008 Server, but found it a bit slower.
The great thing I expect is that NL provides Linux version compiled by Intel C Compiler. You can see in Blender or other 3D application that statically compiled version using Intell CC is faster than gcc version by upto 30%.

Oh, this is great Information, because then I could keep my system clean and only for rendering purposes, connected with a network.

XP32 or Vista32 can´t use more than about 3.4-3.6 GB RAM.
You´ll need to use 64bit for that. XP64 support up to 128 GB. Don´t know about Vista.
Either way, it´s more than your mainboard will be able to handle.

How can you force 64bit Vista to use more of the available RAM. I have 10gig of RAM, and in the last large rendering I was running, MR was only using @3gig, and had much more available? Is there a way to have MR grab all available RAM when it launches?
Thanks

It will only use what RAM it needs. At least you know you have that much more headroom for larger scenes.

Vista64 or wait a while longer for Microsofts next operating system.
