displacement with jagged edges

Can anyone tell me where the jagged edges around the litttle spheres come from?
Displacement map used:
Tried increasing the disp. precision and different meshing quality but it doesn't help. It's directly out of rhino, cylindrical mapping.
Thanks in advance.

I don't use displacement that often but having read around the subject people are suggesting that 16 bit images (rather than standard 8 bit) really could help out here.

well, the actual map is a 16 bit png... thought about that already before i started making it.

You should use more bit depth and resolution in this case.

well, the map has a 1000 pixel width and over 8000 height for three spheres. Should that not be sufficient? The map shown above is cropped for showing it here. I'll see what happens with 32 bit tiff

....and you can make the edges a little blurry to.

Sorry, it wasn't mentioned in your post.

Even for 1000 x 8000 (which is higher than needed in my opinion) and 8-bit, the jaggies in the render look worse than expected. Could you render a closeup using lambert material?

did some blurring too. Map is much more refined than the jagged stuff in the render. Just compare the disp map to the render.

I think this will disappear if you subdivede your mesh, or check "adaptive" precision.

A quick test here looks acceptable...
