Hi there

i want to render a little short film with maxwell. i like to render the interior background seperatly from the characters (saving some render time)

and now there comes my problem - i'd like to render the character with its
shadow in one pass. what i would need is a transparent material on the floor that catches the shadow and stays invisible in the color_pass! any ideas ???

ok i tryed a bit around - but not the result i'd like to have

if i turn on shadow in the floor material and get rid of all layers the shadow pass and the rgb pass are as i need them

but in the alpha channel there is still the floor which i need to get rid of???

ok ok i think i got it

How to make a maxwell-UseBackgroundShader

layer blending mode = normal
shadow = on

layer 1 = "tranparent" (weight 100%)
reflectance 0+90° = black
transmittance = white
nd = 1

layer 2 = "diffuse but turned off" (weight 0%)
settings do not matter

Sweet. So that works for you? Let's you get the alpha channel at the same time, does it?

Doesn't seem to work for me (i get a black, visible item from that material). Does this work for anyone else, is there a trick to it?

Hi sebbo,

your settings don't work for me either :(
Maybe settings of layer 2 do matter? Could you post your materials mxm?
What Maxwell version are you using?
