Some of these tests are labeled 1.2 because they occurred before the announcement, but the functions are still the same. My favorite thing about 1.5 is the improved tonemapping:
  • Image
This requires a calibrated monitor to see properly, but the 1.2(1.5) image clearly displays the full range of values from 0-255, with clear distinction even between 0,0,0 and 5,5,5, whereas the 1.1 image clips values much below 25.

This can produce striking improvements in tonality. Look at this 1.1/1.5 comparison - especially the big black eye in the center, and the improved light propagation in detail areas:

And now, just playing:

I came up with a more realistic approach to car paint - 4 layer BSDF. Here's my first test with Lamborghini yellow, next to a reference shot:

And here's just a red test of the same formula:

Really awesome stuff Mike! I really hope that you've got some secret Star Wars film project that you’re working on because it would be a shame if your work wasn't shown on the big screen at some point.

Perfect simulations!
Class 'A' photorealism. I cannot detect any imperfections.

Thank you Mike for raising the bar once again on pure artistry!

I feel kind of bad saying this, because I can't come anywhere near this level, but your tire material needs some work (and the model needs a few tweaks as well). The rest of it is quite stunning.

I love those flashlight close-ups :)

Nice to see that first experiment in value range, do you think that'll remove some of the burned out look I thought was more prevalent in Maxwell after the alpha's/beta's?
