When doing grass we followed great Realistic Design tutorial.
Trees are imported xFrog objects 'Maxwell' surfaced in Lightwave.
Lighting is done by Maxwell.

We just modelled the sphere, hahaha. :)

i just bought natFx for maya with 30 seeds ..........

i'll have to wait for the payment approval, then i'll be able to pump out some impressive renders ..

FINALLY ! :D

( but damn, this is an expensive hobby !)

I have used NatFX and Onyx, and I have to say Onyx is sooo much better looking in the realism department. But you will still get some good results from Bionatics. You need to make your own materials though. The standard materials look lousy in my opinion.

(P.S. That music was horrible...) :P

yes, the materials have to be set up properly... also color corrections ..

i have onyx version 4 .. it's a couple years old and might be surpassed by far by now, but i really like those options i get directly within maya with LOD and so on. (even though i never used them so far .... hehe )

i'm looking forward though ..

as far as i've seen so far in this thread, the plant realism comes mainly (as you said) with the shaders and overall scene geometry. plants themselves never stand alone without other little vegetation or pebbles or grass or ..

i don't remember whose pic it was, but there's been one about two years ago where an entry way is seen with a little street and many pot plants in very realistic clay pots. it's been the most realistic vegetation pic with maxwell so far.
