The SSS currently in Maxwell is a pretty rough version, it's not fully 100% perfect yet. But it can still do quite a good job if you do your stuff right. Some effects you cannot or will have enourmous trouble achieving now, but those will hopefully be solved for the future updates. Mental Ray been around since before the dinosaurs walked the planet, Maxwell is still just a infant barely outta it's egg yet. Be patient and full SSS support shall be at your hands hehe
