1.7 r2 materials crash v2 mxs files and material editor

Lot of 1.7 mxs files I have wont open in v2.
tracked down to a specific material HT_Rubber_Black_ from the material library that contains a .r2
When the .r2 is removed from the mat everything functions normally so presumably old .r2 materials are suspect in terms of compatibility
