1.x question on red translucent plastic - it renders black?

Hi,

There is a great material in the mxmgallery:

http://mxmgallery.maxwellrender.com/sea ... e=1&id=286

But when I try it out - it renders jet black. The main bsdf layer has 0,0,0 for ref and ref90 - but the preview of the mat looks perfect. If I change the ref and ref90 to another color then the subsurface has almost no effect.

I'm very confused by this?

Thanks,

Kandor

Did you try applying it to the mat testing scene to see if it renders correctly?

No, but I mis-spoke, the material (as well as several others that have SSS enabled) preview black and render black as well. Is there some difference in SSS that perhaps these materials worked in 1.1 but not in 1.5?

I tried it too and it comes out black. That is strange, I'll try and find out what's going on.

Ok, I think I found why it does that. The added functionality of greying out the attenuation distance when an sss component is present would be ok, except that the attenuation distance still plays a role, so it's a bug.

What you can do to get back the material as it was before is delete first the sss component (take note of it's settings), change the attenuation distance of that bsdf to something like 3cm or more, then add the sss component again, changing the settings so it's the same as the previous one.

Cool! :) I'll try right now - I've had an anxious client whom I've been ignoring while I've been struggling to get a plastic material looking right.

Thanks,
