btw, i think i remember thomas once came up with a more complex shape for the preview, can't find the thread though.

No seriously, i think either a more complex default object or customizable preview meshes would be highly beneficial when tweaking the complex materials that maxwell is supposed to offer soon (~2008).

The Utah Teapot is known for it's great topology when testing material effects so that might be a good choice to begin with.
