... you can do it with a chrom ball method now. With method is used for HDRI creation in the real world, but it works in the virtual world too. You need the software HDRShop, if you like to convert your image in other panorama formats.
Kabe has used this method for his basilika model. Try to contact him.

Used here as well with Cinema 4D. You can most defintely use this method with Maxwell and HDRIshop for the long/lat map conversion.

Thanks Tyrone and Micha, but I was not thinking of HDRi spherical background images. I am thinking of spherical equirrectangular projection images that can be viewed as quicktime mov, pan format or IVR format.
I understand that the mirror ball method can be used, but it wouldn´t be an eficient way to do it, in terms of time work effort and quality.

It should be possible if you render shots in 6 different directions and use the images to stich together a panorama.
I'll see if i can do a small test with that method sometime and post back whether it worked or not.
