Group materials in Studio

Sometimes, you have 10-20 different matt Delrin plastics or 10 pages of newspaper; all with the same setting apart from what's mapped to the Reflectance 0 slot. Even with multiple monitors, it's a chore to scroll up and down miles of materials - if one could group them, that'd be just great.

Hi,

Adding a groups structure to the Materials List is not as easy as it seems. The group structure itself involves certain hierarchies, undo/redo issues, etc, but we will try to think in ways to arrange the materials in a cleaner way.

That would be great, if it can be made to work. Also, you often have the same texture used multiple times in a material or across several materials - if one could adjust it in a single spot, that'd be something - being able to change 13 powdercoating materials to a new gloss level at an instant, or adjusting the orange peel normalmap from a different powder supplier for all of them… what a time-saver this would be.

Maybe you just skip the undo

Hi Feynman,

Have you checked the Use override map option? It's useful to set the same projection properties for any texture in the material (tiling, channel, offset,...) and change them globally for that material. You can check it here: http://support.nextlimit.com/display/mx ... Properties

Making the changes across several materials is not possible yet, but it would be a nice addition.

Cheers!

Fernando

Thanks, yes, I have looked at that feature.

In industrial and automotive design, it's rather the sheer number of near identical materials with, for example, different colours or reflectivity parameters or normalmaps that one would like to change globally quickly.

Like shift-clicking all 7 ABS plastics one has in use in a design and then changing the normalmap on one inputs that same one on all others. Hence also the utility value in grouping materials.

Anyway, it's only a humble wish : )

Can't you just edit the map? (create a backup first) and then all the materials will be affected.
