UV/IR and Phosphorescence

Since Maxwell is physically based what about a way to render out the UV and/or the IR of a scene. This would really only be useful for design purposes, but may lead to interesting viz uses as well. I can see where it would be useful when designing daylighting systems for buildings, or if there was a need to test the design of a UV/IR filter, though this may require a new material type.

Which brings me to my next wish: a phosphorescent material. It's probably utterly useless (it's a whishlist), but I think it could lead to interesting animations: say it starts with a bright flash, the material starts to glow, then slowly fades over time. A CRT would be easier to make as well…I realize there are ways to fake this effect, but Maxwell is physically accurate so we shouldn't have to resort to those fakes.

Yum yum, those are indeed interesting and good requests. I'd like them too plz :D

Yes,
And fluorescent materials too. As I sais elsewhere, no something you would use everyday, but great fun to play with.

Of course any material which responds to wavelengths outside visible light would be useless unless Maxwell allowed the render to 'SEE' those spectral wavelengths. As a photographer I would just LOVE to be able to adjust my render more into the ultraviolet or into the infrared.

As a very useful bonus one could add a parameter for heat, thus rendering into the far IR would generate interesting effects. Imagine the heat sensing images from military nightscopes BUT with the ultra high resolution allowed outside the realm of the physical world. At the moment our photographic techology can only digest IR in a particular way, but that information could be rendered more accurately by Maxwell then we could currently see in the real world.

That would be a serious first I believe... a renderer that could increase it's visual ability to include the IR and ultraviolet ends of the light spectrum!

This would INSTANTLY be adopted by hollywood, and realistic IR and Ultraviolet effects would be showing up in films within a year... Maxwellrender would become a must have tool for pros everywhere... just a thot.

Just thinking about it makes me happy.
