Actually just a little checkbox would be nice.
radio button: auto version saver
You could have a cutoff input with this radiobutton, that is, by putting '10' in the entry field, then selecting 'auto version control' the resulting render will replace the current render unless it exceed the number of iterations entered.. once 10 is reached it's next save creates a new file.
filename_v001.tga
anything with "_vXXX" would automatically be protected from being overwritten.
If the field is left empty all renders always create new version.
In this way you can work continuously on testing a setup but once you actually leave it to render you are safe in the knowledge that your new version is safe. Also eliminates/reduces the possibility of one continuously replaced image becomes corrupted.
Lightwave finally has an incremental version save option, which I new use ALWAYS. With a 200GB drive going for about $100 US, I don't see how something like this would be a space issue.
cheers

Mxs overwrite warning is definitely a plugin feature, but image overwrite warning could be both plugin and renderer. So, overall this is a plugin issue, and a wish of mine nevertheless.
