3D(stereo) image maker

Saw that thing recently in Virtual Building Explorer - you can turn on the 'Stereo effect' and watch the images or explore the geometry/building in 3D stereo. Of course you need 'red-cyan' 3D glasses for it 8) (not a problem to get them - you can find those in a cereal boxes, magazines, etc. or just get them online; they're paper and they're cheap.)
You can also project 2 simple images - left&right - so that you can make a 3D image on your own if you're using some other weird or less common 3D glasses. Basically 'red-cyan' is the most common standard.

So, I was thinking it would be GREAT to have such a option in Maxwell. Making your client a perfect photorealistic render is superb, but letting him actually BE THERE in 3D stereo is at least twice as good. :D

So, what do you think...

Well... not exactly. If the conversion into 3D is made properly, the real colors are saved - like in 3D cinemas like IMAX. If the colors are converted wrong, you still can turn the image into black&white, to avoid 'pink-green' effect.
Anyways, the point is to bring the 3rd dimension, cause:
-when you show a cool maxwell render, it's WOW!
-when you show a cool maxwell render in stereo, it's DOUBLE WOW!

I do think that you can render one scene twice with camera aprox. 50 mm shifted in M~R, then you can use some of sw to create that stereoscopic image. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anaglyph_image

True. But some color correction should be done to keep the original colors + there's a very big chance that you make a mistake with precise camera positioning and that means you have to RErender at least once and that's A LOT of time...
so why bother, when things could be done automatically in just one render, by simple choosing '3D Camera' preset (or at least I wish things would work that way )

houdini10 has a built in 3d camera rig and a stereo composite node to put the red/cyan to view in 3d

you can preview the scene in the viewer in 3d using the red/blue glasses or special 3d monitors with active glasses

also can load images from two perspectives into the mplay viewer to view them in 3d

maxwell will be available soon for houdini 10

good to hear maxwell is ported to houdini once again!

btw. Rhino has also got 2 stereo modes built in for display in viewport since v4. (anaglyph & shutter glasses)
