Virtual physical EYE

Hello,
I don't know about you, but in my case, i see the real world more often with my eyes than throught a camera, so i was thinking it could be cool to have a virtual eye too, simulating an eye's lenses setup, to get dazzling lensflares and those kind of "organic" chromatic abberations that would definately give our renderings the perfect realism.
Is that a crazy idea out of subject or does it sound relevant ?
* And maybe what could be the best would be: a "virtual eye retina" with its adaptive sensitivity - which gives something like HDRI compression.
Are there rendering software already using such things ?
