Bump maps are nice, to put it friendly. They only encode some abstract height and the 3D renderer then creates an angle out of it.
It's much more precise - and faster, too - to use normal maps instead of bump mapping. Any chance to get that from NL - or would this be rather a thing the SDK would be needed for?
Normal maps, together with some diffusion maps (which would translate to absorption maps I guess) give results like this:
