Clipping planes other than perpendicular to z axis.
When used for architectural viz, you need to alight them to the design, independentlyfrom the camera position.

I've done something similar by splitting and hiding the geometry. Doesn't this do what U need?
Check out the image "Lycksaligheten" here:

It is possible to do so by many ways, but what an independent clipping plane will add you is the freedom to clip the model in any way, without really spliting the geometry which could be a real problem. In addition to this, if you cut the model, you will be influencing the real light in the space, since the skylight will be entering in through the opening in the model.
On the other hand a clipping plane will not affect the lighting... also if there is a mirror in the scene it will show the real reflections as if the clipping plane wouldnt be there, as well as the real lighting since the clipping plane will not let the skylight enter through it.
For architectural interiors where you have no space to move back the camera it will be a great option! This Clipping plane should splitt the model, but the reflections shadows and enviroment will be not affected.
In this way you can make a section of a cathedral, showing the real lighting in it interior, at the time you will be showing other general and structural aspects in the same image.

OK, but...

OK, I agree clipping planes other than the one currently on offer would be useful.
I will just add that it is possible to have hidden objects contribute to the lighting. The image I linked to does not have any lighting coming in from the top. The rooms are modeled and the top part of the walls and ceiling are hidden. They do contribute to the lighting in the scene however...
Also hidden objects DO show up in a mirror...
