Path finding

I am sure its been written about already.... but im Maya if you put the textures in the same folder as the scene file it will locate the texture even if the original path was something else. I imagine that MAY be easy to do.... it would make life SOoooooo much easier... after all thats what yo have done best with the rendering.

Thanks

yes, PLEASE! :D

and it would be good if one could add a list of different paths, where mxw looks for textures - like it is handled in max.
and when mxcl starts and a texture is missing, it would be better if it wouldn't abort the render but post a window to select the path of the texture.

Hi,

A lot of work has been done in these are. Could you give more details of when mxcl does not find the textures? which plugin are you using?

Thanks a lot!

Juan

hi juan,
thanks for the quick response!
you're right it's already working MUCH better than before! :D
(using x64+max8+mxw64)

but it would be very helpful if you could add a path "on the fly" when you hit render or open the file.

when i load a mxm from the gallery i have to reassign the texture paths one by one.
if i could specify a folder list for my texture or mxm library (like the user paths in max) - maybe on the nice maxwell tab in the preference settings - then i would only have to paste the textures into the specified folders.
with ior data it's the same...

Where you load the mxm? in the max plugin or in mxed? If you load it in mxed, it automatically will look in:

1- In the original path saved in the mxm
2- In the path where the mxm is located (so you can just copy the textures in the folder of the mxm)
3- In the 5 texture paths that you can set in the preferences dialog in Studio (it works also in mxed running in standalone mode)
4- In the original folder but looking for the same name but other format (ej, if you have C:\mytexture.png it will look for C:\mytexture.jpg, C:\mytexture.tga... it is very useful if you want to change the format of all the textures of a material at the same time, there is a preference to enable/disable this behavior)
5- If you are inside Studio, it looks also in the folder of the current project
6- If you are in Windows 64 it looks in both "program files (x86)" and "program files" location
7- In Maxwell/materials database/textures

If the texture is found in any of them, you can save the material to store the new location, so all the texture paths will be fixed. Then you can import the mxm in any plugin.

Regards,

Juan

ahh, good to know! :D

haven't found this so far because i work only in the max plugin (sometimes with mxed but never in studio)
is there a way to do this with the max plugin?

It does seem to better at handling moved files

I went to instal 1.5 on my machine and it won't recognize the license so I can't test it. Mac OSX... will keep messing around

I tested, it is perfectly working.
Pack and go function together with the ability to find textures and extra files solved problems of path writing between different OS and solved problems of archiviation.
You can put everything on a cd and it will open smooth.

Thank,
Riccardo.

 at least one path as with previous plug ins would be good.
