why impossible? Fprime for lightwave has this kind of feature, you have to save along some rather big files with every frame but it works

There is already a continue render feature in the standalone. I would say that at the moment all renders should be expected to go for a good 3, 5, 8, 12, and 40 hours to clear noise in different situations and using a noise reduction tools afterwards.

So if you are doing an exterior render, I would be looking at 5, 12, and 24 hours for the render time, so just use the built in command option feature to extend your render if after one of these intervals or one that you choose is not enough you can just continue from that last render time.
