the ability to assign certain objects different materials through a multimaterial channel id.

like multilight, have a list of objects that are assigned multimaterials with subtree of sliders for each material. could be used to blend materials, and or show different options within one mxi.

seems like this could be easily done. then again, i'm not the one programming it. :D

 My God, what else are we going to ask...!
 On the other hand, a possibility to change material dynamically would be a very nice feature to have for film makers... not for simple renderings.

«easy» ... :)

i see a problem.

imagine a cornell box with a sphere in it.

two materials, red and green. so Your wish gives us one rendering with a slider that lets change in percents from a red sphere to a green sphere.
nice so far !

but You know that for each material, a .mxi file layer must be written (next to possible light layers) that has all colored reflections and refractions and so on saved in it. with just two layers this seems not to be such a problem, but when You have four spheres and six possible materials You want to try on the spheres, this gets insanely complex! not to talk about one sphere is made of glass.

for every possible material on every possible object, it's individual .mxi color layer would be needed... do the math.

much like 100 emitters with multilight enabled?

just a thoughtful wish........ no demands

yes, i have found that this location provides the most productive work environment.
