control light bounces

Can you add a setting to allow control of the amount of light bounces. Sometimes i might only want to have a set amount of bounces eg. 3. and will not need the extra calculation of additional bounces.

Im using the Maya plugin.

it would be more like 100 or so...
maxwell uses much more

I'd like to have it back for artsy, experimental purposes. Though i wonder if the core has been rewritten in a way that would make it impossible.

i wonder actually how the rendering algorithm is built, when the solution always converges to physically «correct» values.

this must be kind of independent of bounces/ray depth ...

Main render core (RS1) has no bounce limits. It's truly unbiased and keeps calculating forever. Only the preview engine (RS0) intentionally let's you set the bounces because of its purpose. For production cores, we always decide to stay unbiased.

ah, thanks Tom !

i think it is okay like this ... :)

* * *

so people would have to use RS0 to make artistic pictures, as Adrian mentioned, by defining the bounces and thus the level of bias ?

hmm, could that look cool ? ...

It always converges towards the correct solution...can never get there, so it keeps on calculating...as opposed to:

bias = making educated guesses about the solution

...which easily fails due to its attempt at intelligently truncating what is actually an infinite calculation.

Could RS0 be added as a drop down option in the Maxwell Plugins & maxwell Studio. This way we can have more control over the look we want.

why calculate 100 light bounces when the look you want might only need 5.

Thanks.

with 5 bounces it would not look like maxwell....
thats why. maybe you could limit it to 30 or 50.

by the way you already CAN choose rs0 for your renderings via menue and vie command line. it is not recommended though, but it works.

where abouts in the menu can you change it?

and by not having a maxwell look is the whole point to limiting the bounces. i might not want a real look but might still want detail.

add -rs:0 to the command line in studio
