I really would like to be able to preview custom mxm materials in the cinema viewport. It would be very usefull to get at least some impression of what the material looks like on an object befor hitting render.

The only way you can use Cinema4D with another renderer and continue to use it like you always did is wait for the near to release Vray for Cinema4D plugin...just wait a little and you'll enjoy quality, low render times and great usability

Hmm.. what type of advertising are you trying to sneak in here DoctorBuzz. Vray info should be kept on the Vray forum and not on this Maxwell forum.
