If I understand you correctly: this is how Maxwell Enviroment and Sun works right now!...

Also you can place a Sun where ever you like by creating an object and apply an emitter material...

Whith the "Sunlight" and "physical sky", it seems you don't need such emitters(correct me if i'm wrong). THEN, whith the sunlight, how do you control precisely the direction of the light?
Wouldn't be fair to have the ability to place a "light" and a light target where ever you want in the scene, and then maxwell would find alone the hour and the day and the location ?

Many questions in one time, but....

...you can not place where ever you want the Sun and Maxwell find the location... there are angles that the sun simply can not be there....

...by applying an emitter material to a sphere it is like using an omni light for example... so you do not have to worry about direction and target for that light....

...if you want to focus a light (like a tortch) you need to model the luminare (you know with a reflective material etc...)
