Unless I've missed something ( quite possible ) it appears that if you open a mxm and modify it it overwrites the existing one. Save As would be a rather useful option

Hi, try using Export material. It is the same as SaveAs because it doesn't overwrite the source file with the most recent changes and the new file is what is loaded in the editor. Hope that helps.

yep, as fran says. export works exactly as "save as".

Export material is really misnamed. It should be "Save As" because the newly named file becomes the current one and it would correspond to current UI convention. Exporting a material suggests that you would be writing out a copy with a different name and the source file would remain the current file - like "Save Copy As..." in Max or Photoshop.

Using the export function always messes me up when I do my edits from within my 3d app. I'll bring in an existing material, modify it, then export it to a new name. However - at least within 3dsMax - once you are back in your app, you have to re-select the new material as it keeps the original one in the material slot. A true Save-as function where this is done automatically within your 3d app would be nice instead of haveing to add this additional step to the workflow would be nice.

yea I kind of agree, it's a bit confusing with the export rather than saveas.
