- who said it would be easy ?!...
I know variants of nature are nearly endless but... please : can we get some textured home style cooking samples.... just to see how they can be set up ?
....'would be great especially for those, who have a "second job" - full-time -and a dual core 3800+ only ...
'just as a solid basis for individual improvement ... saving days and week(end)s of try and error and forum-research ...
'would love to see:
> wooden floor surfaces
> glossy wood surfaces
> marble
> a white lamp shade
> a beige wool carpet
> different kinds and colors of good leather surfaces
> white paper
> white chalk (!) as a "neutral" relation material...
> white wall paper
> water, wine, beer
> several fabrics: linen, silk, velvet
> combined fabric : sample of rough fabric with glossy stichery or pattern on it
> concrete
tbc...
> samples scenes with "materials in action"
> reasonable preview scenes for large material textures ...

All that is stuff you can do yourself with little effort. Don't be lazy..

... THANKS for encouragement Maximus ... or better: leave all the manuals away in future and it will be much more challenging, right ? .... but does this mean people are busy as bees ?.... - I'm not asking for the final job... 'just proposing a life-time-saving basis for all beginners ( with due respect: I know YOU are not one of those

...)

Well sure.. i know what you mean and why you want that, it's a timesaver
but i think we as artists should also do some work on our own and not let
other people do our work for us. That's part of the fun, to recreate realistic
surfaces of various sorts using textures and Maxwell's shaders.
The type of materials you ask for are ofcourse typical for archi work,
that's quite obvious even to me (
hehe).
But as you can see in the Goodies section of the forum there's a material
library under construction there and i'm sure it'll grow as we all learn more
with time. That's a good repository for newbies as well as pro's to find out
how to create a certain surface. Or you could just ask.. most of us try to
be helpful on the forum if we can.

I think "Art-Discussions" really should be another forum, Maximus.

If you want - I would love to discuss this topic with you there .... (ready , when you are ready...)
and : yes ! I know : here are a lot of wonderful people, willing to help- but I think their life-time should not be lost again and again with beginners questions some good samples (or tutorials) could solve.... let's act structured ...
...and save time for art production ... or other fun ...
(Anyway: I hope NL could give these starter -samples, like other render-apps do... maybe they are interested to rise the learning curve....?...)
Looking at the Goddies Section: not much development there yet, and no textured material samples too.... (not even on your homepage, I am disappointed, Maximus!) maybe the best formulas will remain best kept secrets as usual ? ....

I totally agree. For me Maxwell is (and will be) a dream come true .. a render where I finally will be able to concentrate (almost) 100% on creating pictures instead of having to worry too much about technical or renderspecific settings. And for me this includes not having to go too deep into the the techincal aspects of building advanced materials. A set of predefined materials as a starting point for all kinds of material is a must. from such a set every artist can learn and build materials for his/her needs.
Of course it can often be fun experimenting with materials from scratch, just like it is fun experimenting with all other aspects of 3d but having a collection of materials as a starting point is essential - so that every artist do not have to start from scratch. I even think that this could be a very strong selling point for Maxwell to have such a set of materials included in the package or as add-on for customers to buy.
As Maximus mentions we have the Goodies section here, and I really hope that will be grow over time. When I start using the RC versions of Maxwell (probably by RC6) I hope I also will be able to contribute a little there.
Come to think of it .. I think that the same could be relevant for other elements of Maxwell eg. lights (should be a collection of pre-build light objects with correct applied emitter materials), cameras and maybe even standard scenes like a few different studio setups etc.

Max, with all due respect, don't be silly.
First, there's no reason why thousands of users need to reinvent the wheel.
Then, at least for me I can create new materials much faster by tweaking
existing ones than by creating them from scratch.

No need for excuses, Maximus ! - sometimes things become clear faster when discussion partners refer to extreme positions - so : thanks for playing the "bad guy" in this game.... that's more altruistic than one should expect anyway...

Maxwell Render can not afford not offering a robust set of materials! all the other packages do offer them and for good reason... people want to get work done - not play with material settings all the time, they want to check the application right out of the box... stopping to create new materials when not having any, without knowing the application yet is not a good first impression.
You are right, MAX - it is easy to set this materials. So NEXT LIMIT should do this job and quick. They know best how to set this materials, and it will only make Maxwell much more better and attractive to all.

Let's hope that's the meaning of "etcetera" in
"The big Maxwell Studio release 1.x wishlist...!"
http://www.maxwellrender.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9273
read there:
"A material library with standard realistic materials such as metal, glass, car paint, etcetera " .....
well- but it could also mean : materials without textures only ... as in the past ....
...surprise, surprise....

well I dont even think it is good... so all the people with the same renders.. I mean same look.. baaaad, much more satisfaction when doing it you'rself... I mean if al the job in Maxwell is done by others... what's left... you become a push button... thta's it...
no I am not silly...
IF NL wants to... they can make a library... but I won't use it... hehe..
my POV...
+ add the fact nobody told you 3D is simple...
naaaaa fak it... I'm not silly...

Herve... I completely respect your motives .... and from your point of view I completely agree with you..... you - old render majesty- are talking about the " render -walk of fame".... and that's fine....
- but: Here we are only talking about "learning Maxwell-essentials faster" .... please dont let us mix up two different things ....
by the way: NL had an idea of this point long ago - see the 1st § here :
http://www.maxwellrender.com/whitepaper/index.htm
Let's help them winning this goal !....
