Layers for objects organization.

Would be nice for big projects to have layers to keep objects organized. Hide objects, block objects, assign materials by layers,...

What's wrong with using "Groups"?

Ehem

I think I didn't have the group concept assimilated. Groups work pretty much like layers. Thanks for the tip.
What would be fine though is that groups were automatically created from the layers of the host app (I'm thinking about 3dsmax but maybe others apps have other organizing methods). If you have a huge amount of objects it's not fun to select all the objects again to make the groups.

I think this would be great to have, but as an option. You wouldn't necessarily want the same groups/layers in Maxwell that you do in your host app., surely?
Fernando, you speak from the luxurious position of having a plug-in for your application

... I've only just worked out how to import more than one object at a time into Studio...

layers would kick ass, if i have a huge building model in autocad and bring it into MAX it automatically brings the autocad layers with it so its all organized, however the objects are all names are 3dsolid01, 3dsolid02 and so on, i then have to rename them so in the Studio I know what is what. Renaming large building models sucks so layers would rock
Layers are not an option...

Most of my scenes have literally hundreds of components. I can't imagine that people's models are going to get simpler, so using standard ways of organizing things (layers, trees), are simply a must. And obviously I don't want to have to re-group/re-layer all the objects everytime I render. Plugins MUST reproduce the same hierarchy as we are using within our apps. People who don't want layers can turn off the layers window, but for me its a requirement of any decent workflow.
My 2 cents.

layers would be great, could be the same layers coming from the exporting app ... independant from restrictions produced by groups-concept...

I agree, this is necessary to keep some of the workflow. It's just so frustrating right now when you have to start grouping hundreds or even thousands of objects even when you load a MXS file, those should atleast keep grouped/layered objects and the names of those objects and groups. It's quite obvious this is a major timesaver and necessary thing for all of us to have.

I also agree, a must for more complex scenes.
