Is anybody here actively using the new Arion and its new SSS feature ? would love to see a proper comparison/match in the spirit of the glass dragon example ;)

cheers

if you had posted this question in the randomcontrol forum, it would have been deleted already
there was a positive comment about the maxwell for sketchup plugin which didn't stay there very long...

I think the NL guys would encourage such comparisons.

rendering now, will post in two hours, I had trouble setting up a similiar scene and materials in Arion, but framing and the general idea should suffice.

I will leave Arion rendering for one hour on a quadcore cpu only, afterwards Maxwell for another hour and post the images here ;)

Off course this will be an unfair comparison as I am no Arion User at all..

Do you know that you can set the number of bounces in arion? Maybe this setting is not completely uninteresting if you plan to compare the quality and speed...
(i don't know, why this is still called "unbiased" if you can limit the bounces, but this is another topic...)

well, I left everything at default, only set the max resolution the demo allows... I will post the used scene ( dragon setup from Tom ;) with the images..

Both renders are labeled"Arion".

Can you post the dragon MXS too?

was just a placeholder. you can get the MXS in Toms Challenge Thread ;)

Like I said, its a little unfair, as I am no Arion User, so feel welcome to make your own test ;)

They already know of this thread on the Dark Side, i saw thxraph here late last night and he is one of them so it's just a matter of time now until they jump in here with the rest of the team to try to convince us that Maxwell sucks and whatever they are using rules.

Maybe they accept the challenge and post an rcs file one can load in the Arion demo, so I can have it calculate on my machine for one hour again and post the result here;)

I am stretching this* This is no intended pun on Arion, just a curious question how the new sss performs in terms of speed and quality*

I have no clue about proper setups and settings in Arion, just recreated the scene out of the blue..

You got me Max :D snake eyes! I see my darksided sith powers have no effects on you (damit!) xD
I Will post a scene later ready to render with arion (tonight or tomorrow).
I won't say Maxwell sucks or try to convince you it does, because It doesn't suck -at all-. I'll try to be as unbiased as Maxwell is here.
However i'll explain the undergoing things of the 2 renderers & also try to make it clear why the comparision isn't very fair either for Maxwell or for Arion, depending of the point of view.

As a quick tip you can apply now so you get better result in arion: higher the bounces to 512 (sss needs high bounces), of course, nothing todo in the Maxwell's side, as it has unlimited bounces.

Raph

To be fair, Maxwell's SSS is several versions refined, while if I have my facts straight, Arion's SSS is new. Also, Arion is optimized to use GPU power too, so I think it would be hard to get a perfectly fair comparison. Using only CPU is not fair to Arion, because there is untapped power there. I think the only way to do it is to render the same scene to a high SL in both and compare the results, post the times, etc..

But I still believe Maxwell is the standard for quality that all other render engines strive for.
