(Virtual) Shredded Paper Sculptures

This digital photo manipulation series, a collaboration between illustrators/designers Ayaka Ito and Randy Church, turns the subject of each piece into a sketchy, shredded mess.
The paper strip style is created by using 3d modeling software to re-design the models, then the photo details are added to the stripped model, resulting in these uniquely deconstructed portraits.

Using CG to simulate shredded paper - I find this level of indirection interesting:

...and simulating real world materials is well suited to maxwell - although in this case the camera projection is not in place for Maxwell, I believe.

i can imagine you can achieve that look via the ivygrower plugin and then use the created splines as rails to create this form....
(just let the ivy grow on the inside of an object, that works beautifully)

reminds me of MEATS MEIERs work...zBrush...alpha-maps on duplicated/offset geo-layers...
